Normandien
2 day MTB tour |
|
The
annual tour where once again a huge success. This year a
total of 21 riders took part. Although March seems to be
a good option for the future, the weather will always be
an unpredictable factor. On Saturday morning we kicked of
with a strong wind and a short spell of rain on top of Normandien
pass. Fortunately the wind remained in the same direction
and came in handy on the last climb of the day just before
Kranskop. On day 2 we could not have asked for better weather.
We kicked off the day with a egg & bacon roll. Cycling
got underway at 8:30 and every one reached the farm at 12:30.
Thanks to Charlie’s Spar that supplied us with all
the food & groceries. Hope to see all next year !

Sani2C
Full Report 04-06 /03/2010 |
|
Elite
mountain bike members, Garren Soutar, AC Swanepoel and Jenni
Soutar competed in this years Sani2C from 4th to 6th March.
This race requires riders to race in pairs, so Garren and
AC raced together and Jenni rode with Shale Exelby.
There
was a lot of rain in the area in the days preceding the
race, so day required a fair amount of skill to get through
some of the slippery single track. Garren and AC started
in B batch and managed to break away from the bunch early
in the day and raced had to catch some of the slower riders
from A batch and finished in a credible 30th position for
the 82km day 1. Jenni and Shale had a steady day and ended
the day in 8th position in the ladies pairs.
Unfortunately
the weather conditions didn’t improve much over night
and the race organisers were forced to cut out the 20km
single track section leading into the Umkomaas Valley. Instead
we raced on very slippery forestry roads to meet up with
the original route after about 40km. Day two was 97km long
and had a compulsory 10 min stop at half way. Garren and
AC raced hard up to the half way stop after starting the
day in A batch, but lost a few positions in the second half
of the day, but still managed to hold on to their 30th position.
Jenni and Shale showed their endurance and rode well together
to make up a considerable amount of time on the other ladies
and finished the day still in 8th position, but very close
to the teams in front of them.
Day
3 started out with perfect riding conditions, most of the
mud had dried up and the weather was still cool. Garren
and AC set off fast with the intention of making up a few
places over the final 71km, at the final water table they
were well placed and feeling strong, so they put their heads
down and worked really hard for the final 14km to finish
19th for the day. Jenni and Shale were going well until
Jenni took quite a nasty fall and broke her rear brake lever
and was forced to ride the final 25km with front brakes
only.
In
the end the riders did well, with Garren and AC finishing
28th overall and Jenni and Shale finishing 9th in the ladies
race. |

Road championships 06-07/02/2010 |
|
|
The
KZN road championships for 2010 were staged at the Van der
Merwe circuit just north of Camperdown. The route proved
to be very hard with lots of hill climbs in extreme heat
conditions. 2010 proved to be great for our N-KZN Triathlon
Cycles club 13 riders entered the competition and 5 riders
obtained podium positions(4 on the road race and one on
the time trial). On behalf of the club we would like to
thank all riders that entered the event.

| Congratulations
to Garren & Jenni Soutar
There
were 123 starters in the Ultra Marathon and only 52 finishers.
Garren finished 27th overall in a time of 6:17:48. The route
was about 130km long and included two big continuous climbs
with the first one being a 940m vertical ascent over 13km
and the second one being a 780m vertical ascent over 10km.
The rest of the route was undulating without much technical
riding, there were however several fairly deep river crossings
because of all the rain that had fallen in the previous
week.
Jenni
finished 15th lady in the standard marathon (75km) after
a bit of a disappointing ride by her standards, but I am
sure she will be back on the podium at her next race.
Overall position of 141st out of 432 entrants.
